Water-Based Purification Disruption | CES 2026 Debut: The Filterless Water-Based Air Purifier “CUE”

2026-02-27

At the 2026 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2026), Korean company Watervation unveiled its next-generation air purification device, CUE, marking the debut of a disruptive water-based purification technology that departs fundamentally from conventional filtration systems. The launch attracted significant attention across the air quality and home appliance sectors.

A Revolutionary Technical Principle

CUE is built on Watervation’s proprietary WVG technology, which sprays ultra-fine water particles to maximize air–liquid contact surface area. Through this process, airborne pollutants and harmful gases are captured and treated via water washing rather than mechanical filtration.

By removing fine dust and gaseous contaminants through water circulation, the system addresses two longstanding limitations of traditional air purifiers:

  1. Secondary pollution caused by pollutant accumulation within filter media;

  2. Environmental burden associated with periodic filter disposal.

This mechanism represents a fundamental rethinking of indoor air treatment architecture.

A Consumable-Free Breakthrough

The filterless design eliminates the need for replacement cartridges, significantly reducing user maintenance requirements while offering advantages in hygiene and sustainability. Compared with conventional HEPA- or carbon-based systems, CUE introduces a paradigm shift—from “filtration interception” to “water-wash purification.”

If scalable and validated in long-term operation, this approach could meaningfully alter lifecycle cost structures and environmental impact metrics within the air purification industry.

Diversified Market Expansion Strategy

Watervation aims to position CUE as a next-generation air purification solution applicable not only to residential environments but also to public facilities, educational institutions, healthcare settings, and other indoor spaces requiring higher hygiene standards.

In 2025, the device was recognized as an innovative product by Korea’s Public Procurement Service, laying the groundwork for expansion into public-sector and government procurement markets.

From a commercialization standpoint, Watervation plans to launch CUE globally via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in the first half of 2026. Subsequent phases will involve partnerships with online and offline distributors as well as strategic collaborators to progressively build distribution networks across B2C, B2B, and B2G channels worldwide.

Vision and Industry Implications

According to CEO Jeong Yoon-young of Watervation, “Just as rainfall naturally washes the air in the environment, we are now applying technology to realize the concept of water-based indoor air purification. CUE is not merely a household appliance—it represents a new standard in air purification, with applications extending from consumer markets to public and industrial environments.”

The introduction of water-based, filterless purification technology highlights a broader industry movement toward sustainability, lifecycle cost optimization, and structural innovation. Whether water-based systems can achieve comparable efficiency, durability, and large-scale manufacturability remains to be evaluated—but the debut of CUE at CES 2026 signals a bold attempt to redefine the technological boundaries of indoor air treatment.
